Wood Williams to Sarah Louise Hayes |
Date |
1861 |
Description |
Handwritten copies of letters sent from Confederate Civil War soldier Wood Williams of Bainbridge, Georgia (1st Georgia Volunteer Regiment, Company G, the Bainbridge Independents) to Sarah Louise Hayes (McElveen), also of Bainbridge, 1861. Sarah Louise Hayes married Robert Decatur McElveen in 1864, and Dr. William Washington Twitty of Atlanta in 1888. A daughter from her second marriage, Wilhemina "Wilma" Twitty, married James Buttolph Burch of Thomasville, and inherited the letters, which she permitted Elizabeth Hopkins to copy in 1937. The archival holdings of James and Wilma Burch eventually were donated to the Thomasville History Center; the original letters may be in that collection. |
