Receipts or bill-of-sale for enslaved African men and women from the seller, Goodman Davis to the purchaser, E.R. Young, dated July 8, 1843. Elijah Remer Young was a resident of Thomasville, and left $30,000 in his will for the establishment of Young's Female College on Dawson Street. All receipts are pre-printed with the same wording. The first receipt reads: "Received of E.R. Young Two hundred & seventy Dollars, being in full for the purchase of two Negro Slave named Alexander the right and title of said Slave. I warrant and defend against the claims of all persons whatsoever, and likewise warrant him sound and healthy. As witness my hand and seal. Goodman Davis." Dated July 8, 1843, in Petersburg, Georgia. The second receipt is for $350 for an enslaved African woman named Amey. |
