William Jack "B.J." Kimbrough to Red Milton |
Date |
1943 |
Description |
Letter from B.J. Kimbrough in Camp Bowie, Texas to Wilbur Rufus "Red" Milton in Thomasville, March 15, 1944. Kimbrough writes Milton that the program in which he was enrolled - the army specialized program - has been closed, and he is now back in Texas as part of the 13th Armored Division. Around 1,600 soldiers in the program were brought to Texas and will be assigned to various positions such as infantry, signal corps, and artillery. He explains he will go through basic training again, spend a week in the outfit, and then be sent to Louisiana for maneuvers. He is expecting to go overseas at some point but not sure where he will go or when he will be sent and asks Milton to not tell anyone because he's not told his parents of that probability. HIs division has been training for 18 months, so he has a lot of catching up to do. Kimbrough tells Milton that Happy (Kimbrough) is having trouble with his eyes but hopes he will still be able to get his wings ao it will "seem one of us should make good," in the army, and feels it won't be him since he's starting another round of basic training with this new assignment. He tells Milton when he left Utah it was snowing and his new location in Texas - 86 miles from Camp Barkeley - is hot. |
