Notes on Enslaved People | Elizabeth Hopkins |
Date |
1954 |
Description |
Two notes by Elizabeth "Bessie" Hopkins about enslaved Black people. The first is from the June 5, 1855 Southern Enterprise and is about the sale of Festus Flipper Sr. from the estate of James Ponder for $1810. The second note is from the December 18, 1858 Wiregrass Reporter which instructs enslavers and human trafficers to estimate the value of enslaved Black people by a formula of "$100 for every cent per pound of cotton." The example given suggests that if cotton is 10 cents per pound, you shuld pay $1000 for an enslaved person. |
