Summary |
"Two on the Isle: A Memory of Marina Cay" by Robert White, III, 1985. A type of sequel to "Our Virgin Island" with a 50 year retrospective twist. From the inside of the dust cover: " Two on the Isle is the delightful story of a young American married couple who went off to the Caribbean in the middle of the depression in the 1930s to find their own private Shangri-La. They set up housekeeping on a tiny, remote, and almost barren island, Marina Cay near Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, and managed to create a happy and carefree life as they struggled to build themselves a house of concrete, with a cistern to provide water. The sea gave them food. And a thirteen-foot sailboat was transportation. Unlike stories of people desperately trying to escape deserted islands, Robb White and his wife, Rodie, very much wanted to remain on their island in the sun. And remain they did - for three years, as war clouds gathered over Europe. They survived tropical storms, a visit from Rodie's mother (who did not find the sparse amenities of Marina Cay a reasonable substitute for her 8,000-acre Georgia plantation) and an even more menacing encounter with the German navy. And then there was their nearest neighbor, the eccentric Mrs. Bones, who knew all about the Arawaks and Caribs who had lived on the islands in the past...and even claimed to have been on familiar terms with Sir Frances Drake |
