Summary |
"Whispers from Verdura: The Lost Legacy of Benjamin Chaires" by Sharyn Heiland Shields, 2016. Book about the Chaires family and Verdura Plantation in Tallahassee, Florida, which burned c.1885 but the ruines still exist. From the dust cover: "Benjamin Chaires would not live to see the end of the world he helped create. Dead at the relatively young age of 52, he did not experience the civil war that uprooted soutehrn culture and the slave labor system that made achievements like his possible. Instead, it befell his children and grandchildren to try to maintain their vast holdings in a changed environment. Gradually through mismanagement, family scandal, and other vicissitudes, the fortunes of the Chaires family - like so many in the aftermath of the war - proved unsustainable. In the 1880s, the grand mansion of the Verdura Plantation burned. For 130 years, the crumbling ruins have stood there as the forest reclaimed the dreams of its builder." |
